The Secular Morality Project

How do you feel about the following quotations:

"Moral habits...cannot safely be trusted on any other foundation than religious principle"
Daniel Webster, US Secretary of State, in post 1841 -1843
"A morality that is not founded on religion is built "on thin air"
Adolf Hitler 1889-1945
"A world which has to create its own justice is a world without hope."
Pope Benedict XVI's encyclical titled Spe Salvi (Saved by Hope). 30 November, 2007,
All are variants of the frequently heard lament that "without religion we will descend into moral chaos". Irritation with this way that religions assume they are the only source of morality is a major motivator behind the Secular Morality Project.

The project's objective is to demonstrate that morality can and should be secular. That is, not dependent on religion, nor on the existence of any god. It seeks to do this by:
  • Offering an explanation of what morality is and how it evolves
  • Showing there are ways of accelerating the evolution of morality
  • Using these techniques to develop a set of moral principles that are brief, easy to understand and, although distinctively secular, have wide acceptability, even among the religious.
